Student Innovators spend 3 days ‘hacking-away’ during the 2013 Hackathon

Students from the DC/Maryland/Virginia area joined the Student Innovators in the Sheikh Zayed Institute, for the 2013 Summer Hackathon. The event – part of the Student Innovators Program – brought high school, college, and medical students together to design a mobile app and/or tool that addressed childhood obesity. Take a look, here:

Shawnese Gilpin, a 2nd year medical student at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, reflected on the three day event...

“During the first day, we learned about the process of creating innovative ideas and techniques to use to maximize the quantity and quality of our ideas. On the second and third days, we were able to form groups, decide on an app, further develop our app, and formulate a concise presentation to make to potential stakeholders. This entire experience was very novel for me and I enjoyed learning, for the first time, about the science of innovation. This is something that will be useful in my future profession as a physician because it is important to know how to continuously create new avenues to help patients, both young and old. Not only did I get to learn about innovation, but my team and I now have the opportunity to pursue our application further, and possibly be able to help many children tackling obesity."

Technology and innovation advisor, Ivor Horn, MD, MPH, helped to plan the event, and shared her impression…
“I thought they were amazing – I was very impressed with their ability to quickly pick up on the subject matter, and get a unique perspective by digging deep, and doing their research…this design challenge was a great way to effectively apply their conceptual understanding of the hospital, and their skill-sets…they came up with viable solutions in a short period of time, that they could then apply directly to actual issues.”

After a judging period, two teams received prizes for “best overall solution” and “best overall design.” Currently, three of the teams (including the two winners) are working with Sheikh Zayed Institute leaders to develop business plans and apply for provisional patents for their ideas.
